There are varying opinions as to where and how Fila Brasileiro breed was created .

One theory says it began in 1700 s when Brazil was still Portuguese colony as a result of breeding of the Bloodhound, Old English Mastiff, and a type of a Bulldog called Bullenbesser which is now extinct.

Another theory is the Fila Brasileiro roots came from an old dog from Forte Tace .

It was also thought  Fila Brasileiro came from breeding of Bloodhounds, OE Mastiffs, Bulldogs and mixture of dogs Aracambe wild dogs Guara and street dogs .

The breed was developed 350 years ago by the Dutch settlers who brought their dogs with them when they settled in Brazil .

Fila Brasileiro was used to hunt jaguars as well as other predatory animals.

From the Mastiff Fila would inherit its massive body structure and the shape of the skull, short muscular neck  the substance, slightly curved croup, moderated tail set, the courage, the black mask and also mastiff’s basic colors .

The Fila’s  loose skin ( inherited from Bloodhound ) is a defense tool used to avoid injuries when chasing big cats and working with cattle .

The melancholic look, pendant ears, pronounced occipital peak, pendulous lips, hanging flaws and dewlaps, well developed nose with great sense of smell and long bark are also due to its Bloodhound heritage .

The Bulldog is responsible for Fila’s ability to herd cattle, to resist pain, strong temperament persistence and stubbornness .

Fila Brasileiro has typical rose ears, higher hind legs and the higher croup than the withers .

For the last 300 years the filas characteristics have remind basically intact.

They are use for cattle work, as hunters and guard dogs .
